West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus is a virus carried by mosquitoes. The virus is a health issue, but it is not a cause for panic. In rare cases the virus can cause an infection affecting the nervous system. Animals and many types of birds, including crows and blue jays, can be infected with the virus. School sites should make sure to drain all standing water, make sure doors and windows are tight fitting, and make sure roof gutters are not plugged and drain properly.

If you find a dead bird, it should not be handled. Notify the California Department of Health Services at (877) 968-2473. If you notice mosquitoes on your site, call Kern Mosquito and Vector Control (661) 589-2744.
